Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Philippe Petit in major new release The Walk based on the Frenchman’s extraordinary tightrope crossing between the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in 1974.

He studied magic at the age of 6, took up juggling at the age of 14 and started tightrope walking at 16.

On 7 August 21 years ago, Petit crossed a cable in the New York sky a quarter of a mile from the ground. The “act” took 45 minutes to complete but took six years to plan.

In this revealing infographic you’ll find out more about Petit’s life, discover just how high he stood on the wire (with no safety net nor harness) and many other remarkable facts.
